Etzion DCO: Fence on fence... What are they afraid of there?
Place:
Etzion DCO
Observers: Shlomit Steinitz, Natanya Ginsburg (report and photo)
The image of the iron fences greeted us at the DCO …..it was not enough that they have fenced in the whole area but now they were busy putting barbed wire on top of that. For years the DCO has not been attacked, stormed, shot at…..and it survived. What is in the minds of the IDF. What are they expecting to happen….or maybe we should ask what actions are they contemplating which would bring on such an attack. All Arab villages have been so secured by gates and bars and mounds of earth and turned into small ghettos….the question is are we now also putting ourselves into ghettos. Soon there will be a wire netting on top to make assurance doubly sure….and maybe we should not give them even more ideas.
The main thing is that the road to Gush Etzion now has two lanes there and two lanes back.
We still cannot find out on what they are surviving. One woman said that she was a teacher so she was earning but her husband who had worked at Rami Levy no longer has a job. Both she and another man asked after Sylvia. We were told by one man that they earn some money selling eggs and were surprised to hear the eggs are sold by the weight.
We feel that people are less and less prepared to talk to us.
