Abu Dis and Sawahre checkpoints, Monday PM, 5 Jan 2004.MachsomWatchers: Chagit Sh., Irus B., Ora A. Near the gas station:A great number of Border Police. We heard from three different sources that some 100 people were detained there in the morning. On the way to the hotel, near the narrow opening in the wall: Two BPs observe people climbing over, but make no attempt to stop them. From the hotel, the formidable Wall is seen. [This portion of the Separation Fence is made of 8-m concrete slabs.] The rapid progress of its construction is alarming. As we walked back, we were overtaken by a convoy of police cars, escorting the Israeli Minister of Internal Security, Tsachi Hanegbi, who has apparently inspected the Wall.On the road to Sawahre (“The Container” checkpoint):We encountered a new roadblock: a police mobile checkpoint. Near The Container:We overheard the commander Shafik ordering his men to enable the traffic to move smoothly and warning them not to inspect the cars of people that he called “VIPs”, like Abu Ala, who lives nearby. He also told Yigal, the commander of the checkpoint, who was reluctant to identify himself, that he must give us his name and ID number.
