South Hebron, AM
South Hebron, Sunday, 25.07.04, AM Watchers: Judi A., Sarit H.; Gillie P. (reporting). We left Shoket with I. at 6:35 AM. No military presence at Tene-Eshkolot junction. We continued to the Shim’a checkpoint. 2 regular army soldiers were standing at the checkpoint and did not ask for our ID’s. Dura-Al-Fawwar: Smooth flow of traffic. We could see 2 soldiers in the pillbox. Hebron-Yatta (Sheep Junction): Few hundred meters before the junction a military Hummer passed by, but the junction itself was empty from military presence. East Hebron [the “Humanitarian Barrier”] – The road was re-fixed and the shack (budke) re-moved back to the center of the road. No military presence. Halhul Bridge (7:15) – Passage of vehicles was flowing smoothly. We did not notice army patrols. The gate from road # 35 to the bridge is still locked. Shuhuk-Sa’ir (7:50) – Few taxis were standing at both sides of the barriers (junction). One of the taxi drivers told us that they can’t drive to BET-LEHEM (EL-HADER) because the soldiers stop them at ETZION barrier, take their ID’s and tell them to tern around. He thinks that the problem is in the South Hebron CDO. Besides that they hardly feel the army at this area, he mentioned. Zif Junction (7:35) – The junction is open, without soldiers. It seems like a “rush” hour with several people riding donkeys and pedestrians passing through. A Sama-Yakinton Barrier – We did no see soldiers or any signs for the army, beside the (empty) “Budke”, the (empty) parking lot and the plastic barriers on the road.We returned to Shoket Junction at 8:10.

Zif Junction located on the crossroads that directs towards Road 356 to Yata. Yata is the district city of the southern Hebron Mountains. Usually, this junction is open to traffic. The nearby pillbox is unmanned. But the army and police are present occasionally, sometimes setting up a checkpoint and sometimes detaining residents from the big city. Often, the Israeli policemen inspect vehicles and distribute driving reports to Palestinian vehicles. s
