Bethlehem Friday, 20/8/2004 Observers: Ruhama W., Magdalena H., 2 guests El Khader. No Soldiers and normal amount of people passing from Hussan to El Khader and yellow taxis and transits. One of our guests, an orthodox Rabbi, wore a skullcap, and the people around couldn’t believe that he was with us. The discussion between the Palestinians and our guest was quite interesting, because they were sure that he hates us and them. Gush Ezion. Parachute soldiers at the CP. There were ten detainees on their way from Hebron to Bethlehem, all in possession of green IDs. They were divided into two groups, and according to them, one group had already waited for two hours and the other for one and a half hour. The soldiers, on the other hand, said that they were detained for no longer than twenty minutes. In the meantime, they took the IDs of another five people for checking. The detainees set in the sun. There was no water and no shadow, just a little shadow behind the concrete barriers. We phoned to the DCO commander. He said that he was not in the area, but would arrange for somebody to see what could be done. Meantime we went to buy water for the detainees. The soldiers insisted that they were behaving very correctly (” We are not beating them up, not even cursing”…). It took another 40 minutes until the detainees were released. Bethlehem, CP 300. Twenty cars in the line to Bethlehem. Passing took 30 minutes because of the checking of big transporters. From the other side we nearly couldn’t see anything — the BP immediately told us to leave “their” CP. No pedestrians were passing to both sides.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
