South Hebron, Tuesday 23.3.05, AMObservers: Snonith [Hebrew] Zafrira [English]We left Tel Shocket at 6.45 having just heard on the radio that curfew has been imposed on the occupied territories because of the Purim holiday and Palestinians will not be allowed to cross until after the holiday next week. Sansana checkpont is now manned by border police who waved us across. The road from Samoa to Hebron is blocked at Rd 60 and passengers have to cross the road over the earthworks to get transport on the Hebron side. Dahariya Entrance blocked with rocks. Dura-el-Fawar Both sides open Sheeps crossing The usual earthworks and pedestrians have to climb over them on the Yatta side. We received a phone call on the way to shioch and Hebron from Jumah, saying that the settlers from Maon had poisoned the sheep grazing field in order to kill the sheep and he needed help to get to the police. We turned back and went direcyly to Khirbet el Tawani where we met with J’, S’, two members of the Christian Peace organisation, one of whom is a vet, and a group of women all looking at a dead sheep. According to the vet, it had shown the symptoms of poisoning. The rest of the sheep in the fold looked somewhat apathetic.J’ showed us the posoned wheat grains that he had gathered from the grazing field where they had been scattered in batches. We phoned the police who told us to bring Jumah to lodge a complaint, but knowing from previous experience that we would not be allowed beyond the gate at Kiryat Arba, we akked that an officer who is familiar with the village should come out. At the same time. a woman who had been stoned by the settlers on Sat. appeared, but she was too frigtened to lodge a complaint. We returned to Tel Shoket at 9.00

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
