Hawarre, Tapuach Wendesday 15/6/05 PMobservers: Nora R., Ruti B.,Deborah L.(reporting)It is overwhelming to experience the endless web of obstacles that forbid any kind of normalcy in the lives of the Palestinians in the West Bank. By moving from one checkpoint to the next it seemed as if we were being sent on an impossible mission like a rat through a maze . 16:30 We arrive at Hawarre without any more checkpoints (none at Yitzhar) and are greeted by yet another flowered flag from The Women of Blue and White from Haifa. Officer Z. on duty. There we find 5 detainees. All are Israeli Arabs who went into Nablus and now want to return home. The soldier tells us that after calling the police to come and check them he can hold them for up to 2 hours if the police don’t show up. He decides how long according to his own criteria. They have already been there for an hour and a half. We decide to head home and as we pass the bus stop at the Hawarre checkpoint we see our young man with the white skull cap catch a ride. So the police didn’t hold him. 19:00 We get to Tapuach and 18 cars are waiting on line coming from the North to the South. Thank goodness we can now go home to freedom. And not only do we get to go home but we even managed to miss all the visits of the Women of the Blue and White from Haifa. We are lucky but what about all those who are left behind who have to experience this 24 hours a day? We feel the shame of it all.
