Abu Dis, Wadi Nar (Container)Thurs. July 7.05 PMObservers: Eva P., Nurit S. (reporting)We drove up to the Cliff Hotel in Abu Dis and the Pishpash. Thewhole area is totally dead. It was also a very hot day today and wewere there at about 3:30 so maybe that had something to do with thetotal absence of people. We arrived at Wadi Nar at about 4 and found a huge traffic jam thatspread for miles around. We couldn’t see the end of the line of thecars coming from Al Ezariya on the old road and there was also a verylong line that we could not see the end of from the new road. Tens ofmen, passengers from the taxis, were standing around. We asked the BP what was going on and they said that there had been awarning. It seemed that they were looking for somebody. The BP werebusiness like, answered our questions and went about their business. There were some arguements as to weather the cars could go in bothdirections on the new road. The BP told us that the new road was onlyto be used in the direction of Al Ezariya and in the direction ofBethlehem. Apparently (a Palestinian told us) the people had takendown the sign in Arabic stating this rule, and ignored it. The BP wereannoyed. After about one and half hours, the BP started moving carsalong without checking and the traffic started to move.

A checkpoint on Jerusalem’s municipal boundary.

It sits on the separation fence south of Abu Dis. The checkpoint is manned by Border Police soldiers and private security companies and operates 24 hours a day. Palestinians are forbidden to go through, other than residents of the Qunbar and Surhi families who live west of the separation fence, some of whom have blue ID cards and others have entry permits to Jerusalem. Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint. Visitors to the families are permitted through the checkpoint only after their hosts obtain permits for them at the checkpoint.
