Anata, Ar-Ram, Qalandiya, sun. 24.07.05 a.m.Observers: Ora A, Shlomit F (reporting)Ar-Ram 6.35: Traffic moving well. Few people at the checkpoint. No detainees.Qalandiya6.45: Few vehicles in the passageway, moving relatively quickly within a few minutes. At the checkpoint itself, few people are waiting in line and they move through quickly. No detainees. One boy without an i.d. tried his luck but did not succeed. Two men told us that they have been trying for 2 weeks to get into Israel, but have not succeeded because of the closure, even though they have all the permits and they must work to support their families. Ar-Ram7.50: The traffic is flowing. Two women are detained at the checkpoint. The soldiers allowed us to speak with them but we don’t know Arabic and they don’t know Hebrew so that didn’t help much. We asked the commander of the checkpoint about them and he said that they were in Israel without permits. The soldiers would write reports about them and they would soon be released. We asked if there was a closure and he said that there was.Anata8.15: Ten detainees at the checkpoint and according to them, they were already there two hours. We asked to speak with them and at first the soldiers objected but after Ora asked if that would jeopardize the security of the State, they allowed it. To our question about why the detainees must stand in the sun, a woman soldier answered “if I can stand in the sun, so can they.” We left the checkoint after a half our after 5 detainees already were released. We tried to call someone from our car to speed up things, but it was 9:00 by the time we got someone. By then, we saw that all the detainees were released.
