Jalama, Rihan, Sunday, July 31, 2005, AMObservers: Ana N., Netta G. (reporting)Jalama, 06:00 – 06:05: Closure.Rihan, 06:50 – 08:50At the pedestrian passage traffic is sparse and there are “no problems.” Those arriving at the gate are people with the proper permits for days of closure. In front of the vehicle passage there is a line of only 3-4 cars. Drivers are required to get out of the car, lift their shirts and roll up their pants. It is permissible to transfer quantities of five boxes, for the family’s consumption. The checkpoint commander, Second Lieutenant Z., told us that there is a list of the number of cars that are permitted to transfer up to 15 boxes. Z. says that on days of closure they have to be even more strict than usual. An Arab Israeli woman is allowed to cross into the West Bank, even on a day of closure. According to Z., she is one of 4 Israelis married to Palestinians, who used to cross at Baka gate and now, since that gate was closed, they need to go through Rihan. Z. had no answer as to what happens with residents of the village of Nazlat Eissa, including school children who used to go through Baka.An Arab Israeli, driving a car from a printing shop, wants to bring in his car a few hundred math and Arabic workbooks. The booklets were printed in the West Bank and are intended for summer camp children in Wadi Ara (Israel). He is not allowed to bring them in, because the quantity is considered commercial. After long deliberation, doubts and listening to various types of advice, he goes into Israel, leaving the booklets behind.Another Arab Israeli was dragged into a loud argument with a female military police soldier, who is extremely harsh. He is not allowed to go into Israel and is forced to return to the West Bank despite the closure.Second Lieutenant Z., who seems like a courteous soldier, was unable to clarify this incident for us.
