Jubara, Irtah
Jubara, Irtah, Thursday, 21.7.2005, PMObservers: Rena D., Rachel H. (reporting)Summary: The terminal in Irtah is closed, because of the imposed closure; “Back to back” carrying over is going on; At Jubara heavy traffic of vehicles and pedestrians; Illegal aliens are detained as a measure of punishment. 15:40 – Jubara: Two soldiers from the Nahshon battalion and one police-soldier check meticulously the passers over. Five people are detained but two of them were released 5 minutes after our arrival. The soldier takes care of providing water to the detainees. Settlers who are waiting for a lift shout to the soldiers to haze the Palestinians as much as they can and suggest to me: “go away”. 16:00 – A long line of vehicles, lorries especially, stretches from the east. Three lines are open: One for the settlers (6 vehicles); The second and third (over 15 vehicles) for Palestinians and Israeli Arabs. The nice female officer, with whom we are already acquainted from Irtah, claims that traffic is heavier than usual, and therefore she has opened the third line. She also told that she is now in Jubara because Irtah is closed. Three police soldiers inspect the vehicles thoroughly in a pace of one in a minute and a half to two minutes. 16:15 – A queue of 5 cars and 10 pedestrians by the CP at the exit from Tulkarm, manned by soldiers of the Nahshon battalion. 16:20 – The western third line that was opened previously in order to lift the pressure from the second one, is closed. Now, two vehicles are inspected at the same time at the second line. 16:40 – There are more detainees at the entrance to Jubara, total 8. The female police soldier faces difficulties in passing the numbers of the cards of the detainees, so that all of them are still waiting, among them one on his way to visit his mother in Nablus hospital. He is finally released at 16:53. The other illegal detainees have authorizations from the General Security Service, but the soldiers choose to keep them detained further, as a “punishment”, that will deter them from entering Israel to look for work. 17:00 – A., the DCO representative arrives. A resident from Jubara, who is preparing a wedding, talks with him. 20 minutes later a group of women for the wedding arrive and are detained. We called A. and he came quickly, and allows them to pass at 17:28. 17:35 – A vehicle of a resident from Jubara and 3 boys who have a permit for gate 22 are not allowed to pass. They carry some merchandise that they try to sell at the crossroads. 17:50 – Irtah – A deserted CP except of two lorries “back to back”. 17:55 – We left.
