Bethlehem and Surroundings Monday, Aug.1,05 AMObservers: Malka A., Ada G.,(reporting) 07.30 Biet Jala: Not much traffic, it flows, there is a check of a truck that creates a line of about 10 cars.07:45- El Kahdr: The soldiers and jeeps hae left and return occassionally. Lively traffic of taxis, Haya opened her office in the car. The usual problems– police fines, GSS rejections and family reunification.09:15: Biet Omar; the obstruction to the village is open.09:30 Halhul: There are no people except for a Palestinian who had an appointment with us.09:50 Nebi Yunis: traffic flows.10:30 Ezyon CP: RAndom checking of cars, no detainees. The soldiers tell us that they try to check quickly. Ezyon DCO: A few people waiting for permits. Some of them have been waiting since 7:30-8:30 in order to get their longed for permits–permits for hospitals, the problem is that Azhar is not at the DCO or at some meeting and there is nobody to sign the permits. This regulation must change. The waiting people are pressured and upset. They don’t know if they will get the permit or not, when they will get it if they do, etc. A young Palestinian woman who is writing a doctorate in Italy joined our shift. The subject of her doctorate is urban socialization and how various factors influence it; such as the fragmentation of the occupied territories, checkpoints, closures, ect. She showed us a new point of view of us (machsomwatch) at the checkpoints.
