Ar-Ram, Qalandiya Wed. 10.08.05 a.m.Observers: Yehudit E., Nurit N. (reporting,) guestAr-Ram6:30. We reached the checkpoint and observed it from the other side of the road. There was not much traffic either of vehicles or pedestrians. In the VIP lane, there were 3 cars and the line was closed. A soldier, with a cup of coffee in his hands arrived and slowly opened up the lane (moved the red plastic barrier) and 2 vehicles passed. The driver of the third, a UN car, had a green i.d. The soldier took the i.d. and went to his post. After 3 or 4 minutes, he returned and did not let the car through. Only after the driver turned his car around heading north was his i.d. returned. We went to the post and did not see any detainees, and it appeared that the people were crossing through the checkpoint quickly. Qalandiya7:20. On our way from the cars to the checkpoint, a young man stopped us and said that a new checkpoint was put up near the Benjamin gate. It appears that at that point, there are sometimes checkpoints and sometimes they are removed. According to what the boy said, a checkpoint was placed there two months ago, it was removed and put there again yesterday. Pedestrian traffic moved quickly and was relatively sparse. Also the cars moved smoothly and there was not a long line.
