Jubara
Jubara, Wednesday, 17.8.05, PM.Observers: Sara F., Raya Y. (reporting)Guest: Dafni (student)18:00 – On our way from Beit-Iba, we passed Jubara, and stopped by a roadblock We saw a Palestinian, with his hands handcuffed tightly behind his back and his eyes blindfolded with a black cloth. The shackles were so tight that they left marks on his wrists. Sara shows the soldier the marks and asks to release them. After some arguing, the man is shackled anew with his hands in front. (We have noticed that there are two types of shackles, the thin ones, which cut into the flesh, and newer flat ones.) I ask the soldier to take off the cloth from his eyes, because the place is not a military zone and there is no reason why he should be blindfolded, unless it is for the sheer purpose of humiliation. The reaction we get is, that he is wanted by the GSS and had I known what for, I would have understood. The commander orders us not to speak to the soldier, but allows us to speak with the detainee. He left. We called K. and ask him to check why the Palestinian is detained, and ask him to order to take off the cloth from his eyes, for it is an act of humiliation. He promises to check. 18:30 – We called K. again. He is still checking. 18:35 – We try to talk with the Palestinian. He says that he is being detained for an hour and a half. The soldier in charge does not let us speak with the man. Only after calling the commander, he gives in. 18:40 – We ask him to give us his cell phone, in order to follow up. 18:45 – On our way home we call K. again; he is still checking. The following day I phone to the Palestinian. There is no answer. Is he scared? Is he still detained?
