Jerusalem
Abu DisSaturday February 11, 2006 AMWatchers: Rachel H and Nina M (reporting)We were just at “pishpash”, this unbelievable “passage” through the wall. People were climbing to go in and out. One or two jeeps with border police parked opposite and border policemen were checking some people. We did not want to speak with them-we had nothing to say to these tools of oppression. Their checking system was very clear: all young men and women were checked and only blue IDs owners were allowed to continue towards Jerusalem. Even middle aged man on crouches, who had climbed the wall with great difficulty was forced to go back. In fact all men with Palestinian IDs were not allowed to go towards Jerusalem. The only exception were older women. Between 8 and 8:30 AM a lot of women carrying huge, heavy packs of vegetables were passing through the wall going to Jerusalem bazaar near the Nablus Gate to sell their products. These women were our heroes. They carried packs on their heads, while carrying huge bags in two other hands. Some were dragging boxes on the road while carrying packages on their heads. Some were going back and force to transfer more and more vegetables to transits waiting on the other side of a blocked road. Obviously the old women are family providers. They are the only family members who could pass today. We saw a young man with a huge pack of vegetables, who was forced to go back with his goods.. The women had a very determined face expression-they needed to earn money for their families and they acted for this purpose. The women were around our age, around 60, and we wondered how they were able to disregard back pains, knee pains , neck pains and to carry all this terribly heavy staff first climbing through the wall and than through the roadblock. At the beginning some women with vegetables were stopped but later soldiers stopped trouble them. Young women had to find their way differently-they climbed through neighboring fences and yards. When we expressed our admiration to them one of them with a small child said- “what can I do I need a medicine for my child”.
