Beit Iba, Monday, 27.2.2006, PM.Observers: Michal A. Zahavi G. Yona A. (reporting)Natanya translating. Beit Iba, 14.25 – We arrive at the pedestrian checkpoint. One detainee in the enclosure. An elderly man tells us that he came by bus and gave in his id together with others and descended. The soldiers claim that he tried to run away and therefore they have sent in his details to be checked. The commander asked Michal not to photograph and she said she would not photograph the soldiers themselves but he insists that the area of the checkpoint is a closed army area and that we may not photograph there. An argument ensues and the soldier explains to us that in the name of security we may not phone. To assist him he enlists a captain with the rank of lieutenant who introduces himself by names and explains to us the danger in the documentation of the place and asks us not to photograph. 15.00 – Two more detainees in the enclosure, 2 young men from Qalqiliya who had entered Nablus with no problem to fix their car and now they are being detained on their way home because they do not have a permit. We notice the electronic control on the iron door of the enclosure. Those entering Nablus are carefully checked. A young man has a little bag of coffee and the soldier feels it. 15.10 – The two men from Qalqiliya are freed. The military policeman in the hut amuses himself by shouting remarks at those passing. He asks a young girl who limps “Why are you limping? What happened?” Shouts at the men “come here” and also to the women he says to one who shows him her ID “Ok go …but slowly.” 15.20 – We remind the commander of the detainee who has been in the enclosure half an hour. The soldier says he was detained at 8.00 and ran away and only for the past half an hour has he been detained and is being checked. 15.35 He is freed. 15.40 A man of 60 going by car from Nablus to Qalqiliya went into the wrong lane. The soldiers told him to get out of the car and go into the enclosure. The explanation we received from the commander was that of security of course). Another lane was opened for the ordinary people from Nablus. Another lane was for humanitarian vehicles and VIP and the third for those going into Nablus. When an ordinary car goes into the humanitarian line is becomes a security problem and that is why the man was detained. 15.50 The detainee was freed and scolded “Next time…”

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
