Tarqumiya and South Hebron, Thursday 2.2.06, AMHagit Back reports in Hebrew And Susan S English9.30 – 13.30According to Defense Establishment in August this year the new border terminal will be opened.Certainly a lot of heavy transport is at work in the area.On arrival long queue to vehicle transfer, seemed to be in an orderly way.Accidentally on our arrival the representatives of the American mission for border control that is responsible for financing project were visiting. They were there with two Palestinian reps, and second in charge MATAK Hebron, second in charge Jehuda division, Becalel Treiber In charge of the borders from the defense department.Becalel was very actively preventing from us to be able to talk with them.In Tarqumia a “sleeve” has been put into motion. 20 Palestinians are requested to cross over to entrance of “sleeve”, and one at a time when the green light appears above the carousel worker passes over to steel door opposite the carousel, on the left hand side small window with print of hand and worker place his hand flat on this window., again when green light appears above door worker can enter, what happens inside we can not see, but it takes some (6-7) minutes before he exits on the far end.Apparently when the terminal opens, they will be all similar. The Israeli patrol in Tarqumia consists of the Military Police (with blue caps) and the border Police in charge of guarding the checkers. When we asked one of the soldiers what the problem was, they insisted that they were short of M.P’s and in her opinion in the morning it took only half an hour for workers to cross the border. They claim that with our pressure we can help, and we think that with a little good will they could improve the situation.Only time will tell if we can help change the situation.Machsom Idna Tarqumia open and pillbox attended as usual.Halhul Bridge Hebron traffic flowing pillbox attended. On road 35 Taxi was stopped, we were promised that drivers identification card shell be returned soon, and really on the way back we did not see him.Shiuch Road -Hebron trucks loading back on back, no army to be seen Road 356 Susan’s car was photographed. Next to the pillbox the base is being enlarged. In Hirbat Tawani the school children arrived on time under the auspices of the army. All in all very quiet on the roads, no people no cars, but the almond trees are flowering in all their beauty

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
