Jubara, Anabta, Thursday, 2.3.2006, AM, .Observers: Nora R. Hannah P. (reporting)Natanya translating. There is tension at the checkpoints on the day after the attack and new rules. 7.l0 Jubara checkpoint. There is a long line of people wishing to enter the village including farmers desirous of entering their lands which are enclosed by a wall. But no one under 25 years of age is allowed to enter. The children’s gate. 2 buses with children inside waiting. The gate was locked but now it is open. The soldiers were late in arriving. We went back to the main checkpoint. The commander Alon does not allow us to go further than the tunnel even though we gave in our names and IDs a month ago. He claims that the list was lost and they are checking with the brigade. After a few minutes Nora asks the commander of the brigade to give an order that we be allowed to pass to the checkpoints at Charis which is under the Palestinian authority. He is angry and will show us his anger in the future. 8.00 Checkpoint Charis15 cars with one soldier checking. The other soldiers are guarding each other and tell us that it is dangerous to stay in the area. No one under the age of 25 is allowed to enter. An older man of about 45 is not allowed to enter because he is from Tulkarm. Kamil at the DCO tells us there is no such order. 9.15 Anabta – A limitation by age for those wishing to leave. Little traffic and most of the time there are no lines. 10.10 On the way from Anabata is a rolling checkpoint. 10.30 – Beit Iba. About 100 yards before the checkpoint we meet a soldier who tells us he is a learner and wants to hear exactly what it is we do. The line is not long but there are about 15 detainees. It seems there are new limitations today. No one from Jenin and Tulkarm can pass this checkpoint today. The detainees are students who were prevented from passing and tried twice to get through by taxi. One says he was beaten badly but the soldiers deny it. Their cellphones have been taken from them temporarily and also their cameras. The soldiers claim they are forbidden to phone. Nora phoned the spokesman of the brigade, Gil: 0578175528 and after two hours they were freed. Remark. The people from Jenin and Tulkarm were sent to the checkpoint at Al Badhan which is a long way off. On the way out at Jubara, Alon made a very thorough inspection of our vehicle including opening the suitcase in the baggage compartment.
