Groups of workmen arrive in white “transit” vehicles — due to a malfunction in the carousel, they pass on the side of the road, checks are fast, and crossings are without delays or problems. 17:00 The Old Pishpesh Few cross. At the entrance to the Pishpesh a low concrete strip has been erected, behind it stand 4 military policemen. Only holders of blue ID’s may cross in the direction of Jerusalem. We went up to the monastery courtyard from where we could see that the shops beyond the pishpesh were open. 17:20 The New Gate A police van left the premises when we arrived. The place is quiet. 4 detainees and 3 military policemen guarding them. They await the arrival of forms for the fines they have been issued (so explained one of the soldiers later). One of the soldiers forbids us to talk to the detainees and the soldiers. “We owe you nothing, and are forbidden to talk to you.”One of the soldiers speaks to the detainees in Arabic — which we did not understand. Later he explained to us that this opening is closed for crossing. Some who tried to cross in the direction of Jerusalem were sent back. Two boys coming from the direction of Jerusalem were allowed to cross. We watch them climb the wall and cross to the other side.17.50: We returned to Jerusalem
