Beit Iba and surroundings
Beit Iba, Shave Shomron, Jit junction, 17.4.2006, Monday PM. Observers; Michal A. Irit (guest) Ziona S. (reporting)Natanya translating. 15.40 On road 60, crossroads of Shave Shomron, there is a rolling checkpoint in the direction of Anabta which blocks those coming both from Beit Iba and from Jit. We see many drivers taking a bypass on the mountains but now that road is blocked by a car which has been detained. Because of the terrorist attacks passage on foot is forbidden but cars from the Nablus area are also not allowed to pass. The passengers wait for hours for a permitted taxi but these arrive full. A taxi-driver loaded with passengers from Kafr Qaddum tried to bypass in the direction of Jenin and his ID and keys have been taken from him. He asks us to persuade the sergeant to return these to him and to allow him to go on his way but there is no chance. The tension is great and the sergeant tells me not to waste my words. The driver will wait many hours. The bypasses are dangerous and now the taxi is blocking the bypass. Beit Iba. 16.10 6 detainees in the enclosure. A young man who works at the checkpoint as a porter carrying goods in a cart from the supermarket shows us the cart standing on the side and says that in the middle of a job the soldier shoved him into the enclosure. At that moment the sergeant appeared and told me not to speak to the detainee and also told the soldiers that if I would say another word he would summon the police. The man tried to tell us his story but we preferred not to react. We found it hard to explain to the detainees why. There are hardly any cars at either entrance or exit but there are about 140 pedestrians of whom 50 are in the humanitarian lane. 16.20 The pressure of pedestrians has grown and the commander opens another line for women who are checked quickly and efficiently and the line shortens. 16.40 We realize that today there is nothing we can do for the detainees and leave. 16.45 At the crossroads of Deir Sharif/ Jit on road 60 the line at the checkpoint is like a long serpent. The taxi driver from Kafr Qaddum still waits for his passengers. We counted 66 cars. 17.30 At the checkpoint all cars are checked and IDs demanded from passengers in both directions. There are about 50 cars waiting to enter the occupied territories and the lords of the land also have to wait patiently

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
