Anata and Ar-Ram – Thursday 25.05.06 AMObservers: Judy S., Netta E. (reporting), Translation: Netta S.Anata 7:00 AMWe spoke with the local committee representative Sanduka who navigates the buses that take the children to schools in Jerusalem. There is active traffic of students. In Sho’afat/Anata camp there are 40,000 residents, most of them have Israeli residency. 1800 children attend schools in eastern Jerusalem. There’s a private school inside the camp, 700 students attend this school, and 2000 students attend a U.N school (I don’t know if it’s located inside or outside the camp). All the camp’s residents earn a living in Jerusalem, and probably all of them would stay behind the fence which is being built around them. Today is Jerusalem Day, only those with Israeli residency were allowed to go through the army checkpoint, there was a closure for all the rest and only 40-year-old and above were allowed to go through the army checkpoint. The closure applied to both men and women. In order to be on the safe side we checked the instructions through the Liaison and Coordination Administration, and this was indeed the instruction. The manning of the army checkpoint: for over a month the manning of this army checkpoint is being done by BP of the Jerusalem separation barrier instead of BP Jerusalem, (that means that the Liaison and Coordination Administration of the Jerusalem separation barrier is the address for complaints) because of that the transfer in this army checkpoint in the last month was slow, difficult and humiliating. The new BP forces already got used to their new clients and according to Sanduka, in the last few days the traffic has been flowing. According to Sanduka it is also because of the camp’s residents’ complaints to Amitai Levy the commander of Jerusalem separation barrier.Ar-RamAll the Israeli residency owners, not to mention others are sent to Qalandiya. Only a small number of approved who had been inspected by the Liaison and Coordination Administration of Jerusalem, and whose names appear in the army’s checkpoint lists, are allowed to go through Ar-Ram’s checkpoint. All the rest can see the country but can’t go in, only through Qalandiya. That is a very long expensive and exhausting rattle. We spoke to Shadi but we couldn’t understand who the lucky ones were. The students are going through and there’s a line of cars (it’s not long but it exists).Due to technical reasons we couldn’t continue to Qalandiya.
