Za’atra, Beit Furik, Huwwara, Monday, 22.5.06, AMObservers: Annelien K., Ada H., Micky F (reporting)Brutal distraction of the market at Beita.Segregation of ages 15-30 from Tul Karem and Jenin. They are not allowed to cross from Hawwara To Ramalla.Average time to wait about 45-50 minutes ( after already waiting at another CP point).Beit Furik – The taxis steal not allow to go to Nablus or back and so they loose their income. The citizens of 3 villages near Beit Furik (Nasaria, Beit Hassan & Akrabania) are not allowed to cross through Beit Furik CP and have to use other ways to Nablus since Albidan CP was closed via Hamra.07.30 – Zaatra – From the West – 2 buses & 4 cars. On the side a bus is checked, the passengers wait off the bus.2 soldiers checked 2 lines: one is checking the buses & the other one is checking the other cars. Time for cars is about 8 minutes per car. For buses it takes around 45-50 minutes. The soldiers follow orders strictly, checking each ID on the list and the computer, but they are polite and try to help when it is possible for them. The passengers have already waited an hour at A-Ras CP, are very angry and complaint that we, MachsomWatch do nothing for them. 30 km takes 2 hours and few more CPs on their way.2 young men are sent back. Because of the segregation, a 24 y.o. nursing care student and a Tul Karem citizen who had some arrangements in Ramalla were stopped. They have been waiting more than 45 minutes.A man who carries an ID from Gaza but lives in Ramalla had been checked for more than 30 minutes until the end of the telephone inspection. When freed to go his bus had already left and he was looking for a car to take him. From Hawwara – 3 checking lines. Long line of cars of which the end of it could not be seen. A taxi from Nablus has been checked for 10 minutes, that after waiting for an hour at the Hawwara CP and here for another hour. Another Taxi waited for an hour at Sara CP (Git?) and for an extra hour here. There is an humanitarian line here too but the check up is very thorough and traffic moves very very slowly. Each car stops about 50 m. from the soldiers point, the driver leaves his car and walk toward the soldiers carrying the travelers IDs, handing them to the soldieres, go back to his car and waits until the soldier will point with his finger, return to the soldier, takes back the Ids cards, goes back to his car and drives away.A taxi carrying teachers on their way to school after a long time waiting dares to drive through the humanitarian line to get to school in time, is returned back to the end of the line. Teachers arriving by car till the CP can not cross on foot. They try to get a taxi which will enable them to cross.08.40 – The Izhar CP is not operative now. The big blocks are still there create the cars checking line, which means the CP is alive and active!08.50 – Beit Furik – Almost empty of people and cars. Those who cross – cross quickly. 3 lorries cross after a short check up. The taxi drivers complain they lose income by not being able to drive to Nablus and back. They say that they appealed to the Israeli DCO but were rejected and tolled to appeal to the Palestinian DCO. They did it but got no answer.A taxi driver is asking to go to Nablus to repair his car but is rejected. The IDF humanitarian center could not help him and he turned back. The mayor of Nasaria village, near Beit Dajan, says that 3 villages in the area: Beit Hassan, Nasaria and Akrabania have to circumvent through Hamra to get to Nablus since the Albidan passage closed. He says that the soldiers make it harder for them to cross there and many are not able to cross at all. On our call The Humanitarian Ctr is checked with the headquarters but got a negative answer: “Those are their orders”. We gave him Piras tel. No. at the Organization for human wrights to check with him what can be done.Something nice: the drivers plant trees along the parking lot.Awarta – the drivers checked with us what happened with their request for magnetic cards. We took names and forward to Silvia P. Some of them are worried weather their licenses will be renewed in June. We asked them to call closer to the expiration date.10.10 – Hawwara – A very small number of pedestrians. About 50-100 people during the rush hour. Each person is checked for about 4 minutes. Time waiting in line is about 30 minutes. When it is crowded the soldiers open an humanitarian line and let women, old people, children and the sick cross. Then the women wait for their spouses on the other side of the CP……….Vehicles : very small number of cars while we were there. Only 7 cars were checked – about10 minutes of checking each. ( (Why such a small number of cars Leaving Nablus? Did they leave earlier or have taken an alternate route?)Detainees – One from east Jerusalem. His ID card was taken by the border police and he got a photo of it from them. He was detained from 09.50 and released at 11.30. He asked our help to get back his ID card.. We took his tell # to notify him if we succeed.11.00 – Beita – At the falafel shop in Hawwara people tell us that the market in Beita was closed. We entered the market and were astounded by the sight – all entrances were blocked with earth and stones, all carts turned over, broken planks and boys collecting things among the debris. The people said that the market has moved to the schoolyard.Since we could not stay longer we asked the next watch to enter and obtain photos and record of the ruins. We learned that “Chanel 10” documented the event whose aim was to force the villagers to surrender some sought after persons to the Israeli army. 11.20 – Zaatra – 30 cars waiting in line from Hawwara.

    • The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre  since 2001  two shifts a day -  morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower.  Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.

On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.

Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and  a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The  "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.

On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.
