Ar-Ram, Qalandiya, Tues. 30.05.06 a.m.Observers: Ori K, Mor B (reporting)7:10 – 8:30 Ar-RamThe atmosphere at the checkpoint was simmering. A long line of cars passed. All the cars were thoroughly checked. Only those vehicles whose owners appear on a list that was put out by the DCL are allowed to pass. Those with blue i.d.’s whose names do not appear on the list are sent to cross via the Qalandiya checkpoint (including those who live near the Ar-Ram checkpoint). Many children from both sides of the fence cross at the checkpoint. Like the vehicle drivers, also those pedestrians whose names appear on the list or if they have a special permit (such as a doctor’s note) are allowed to cross. During the whole time that we were there, some 15 people with blue i.d.’s whose names did not appear on the list were were sent back to cross via the Qalandiya checkpoint. According to the words of the commander, the area from the east of the fence/wall is now considered to be Area A. Therefore, he explained, the rules about opening fire will change regarding the area near the wall in the north of the city.On our way to get a taxi, we went into one of the shops. The owner told us that for the past week, since the fence was finally closed, many customers no longer come and supply vans from Tnuva, for example, find it difficult to get there and/or return.8:30 – 9:30 QalandiyaThree lanes are open. In each lane, about 20 people are waiting. There is relatively quick movement. The lane to the DCL is closed and about 25 people are awaiting its opening. At 8:40, I called Ophir to ask what is happening. He said that he would check. After about 15 minutes, during which nothing changed since I called Ophir, for whatever reason, he said that he did not know about what was happening and again pleasantly promised to check. At 9:00, the DCL opened (it was supposed to open at 8:30). The soldiers announced via the loudspeaking system to get into line and only after they were orderly in line would it open. One of the people complained to us that he was not listed on the DCL list which allows passage at Ar-Ram. He has a blue i.d., and his neighbor who lives above him was on the list. Afterwards, he said that he went to the DCL several times already in order to get a magnetic card, but until now, he was not even able to get into the DCL. “Every time it’s a different story” he said. “One time the computer was stuck, another time the electricity was down”. He hopes for something good today. We tried to get into the DCL but the soldiers would not let us.
