Anabta, Thursday PM, 1 June 2006 Observers: Yehudit L, Hagar L (reporting) Movement and Transit Restrictions: Anabta Checkpoint :The “quarantine” policy of movement restriction has been lifted. There are no restrictions by population group, only by lists of particular suspects.Our route:13:15 – At Tel Hashomer, we pick up the father of a baby hospitalized for chest surgery. On the way, he tells us about Gashuri chemical plant, next to Nitzanei Oz opposite Tulkarm, which causes severe pollution in the Tulkarm area. He speaks of many asthma and respiratory problems in Tulkarm. On the way we encounter blocked traffic due to this being the eve of a Jewish holiday [Shavuot]. and because of the requirements of our hitchhiker we are compelled to enter through the Jubara Checkpoint, so we can’t go [by the shorter route] through Jubara village up to the Ar-Ras Checkpoint.14:50 – Anabta Checkpoint: “Quarantine” cancelled. No restrictions on passage, except for people on the suspect list.The checkpoint is open from 05:00 to 23:00. The soldiers are relaxed, apparently because of the relaxation of traffic restrictions resulting in reducing the pressure on them. Random inspection, no lines of pedestrians or vehicles. The soldiers report brisk vehicular traffic.We go on to Beit Iba, Huwara and Zaatra Junction. [See report under Nablus]

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
