Sheikh Saed Wednesday, 19.07.2006, AM Observers: Nava A., Ora A. (reporter)On our way to Sheikh Saed, we got lost in the narrow winding streets of the Arab neighborhoods and “discovered” in the heart of one a row of houses being built, with a big sign in Hebrew announcing that the name of the place is “Zion Views”. It is not difficult to prophesize that the “estates” that are being built in the heart of a crowded Arab neighborhood will cause trouble. And perhaps it was intended to the builders of these buildings the words of the prophet who said “Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!” Sheikh Saed: 07:00 – A military policeman and a police woman who stood at the entrance to the neighborhood next to the blockcade, forbid us to cross. We did not succeed in persuading them to permit us to cross. We called P. who told us to ask the new commanding officer, A., and gave us his telephone number. We were given permission to enter, to the chagrin of the policeman who tried to make our lives more difficult, and asked for our identity cards, carefully wrote down our details and warned us that we are endangering ourselves, and entering “on our own discretion.”We started to go down towards the square to which the travelers arrive at from the Zeitim CP. A driver of a small car, old and falling apart, that once was damaged by a stun grenade, offered us a ride to the square. On the way he told us that also that morning the soldiers threw gas grenades on groups of residents who left their houses. He complained that they don’t give the residents permits to leave to work. He worked as a builder in Beit Hakerem (a neighborhood in West Jerusalem) but his work permit expired and he did not manage to renew it. He has two children, and he does not know what to do. When we got to the square, he showed us in the distance the path or unpaved road that leads to The Container and said that people walk on this path for two to three hours in the hope that at The Container they will be allowed to cross. Also other residents that we met next to the square complained about their difficult situation. They asked when there will be a ruling about the wall and wanted to know if there was a possibility that the ruling would be to their advantage, that is, that it will be decided that the line of the wall will be changed and they will be able to live a normal life. Unfortunately, we could not answer, only express hope that the ruling will be soon and to their advantage.
