Bethlehem and surroundings, Monday, 6.7.2006, AfternoonObservers: Mika G. Ruth SH. Neta B. (reporting) Shift from – 13:15 till – 16:00 Ezyon DCO: – 13:30: About 30 people were squeezed near the carrousel; they said that every half an hour five people were let in. The problems were varied: permits for visiting sick people who were hospitalized in Israel, getting work permits in Israel, magnetic cards etc. Because of the distress and the crowding we called the C.P. commander, A. He said that they were taking care of the people. We asked where can they get work permits, and he told us to turn to the D.C.O headquarters. At the headquarters they tried to get in touch with the person in charge of the employment, but it turned out that the above had to leave at 13:15 instead of 15:00. This fact was not known to the people waiting outside. After about fifteen minutes the deputy commander appeared. He made all the waiting people stand in one line, and checked with each one what his problem was. This act relived them to some extent. He promised to take care of all of them, and asked them to queue according to their numbers.Five people were let in, the rest had to wait. A few people dressed elegantly were let in too, afterwards we heard that they had been here yesterday and a meeting was arranged for them today, so they did not have to stand in line. We waited outside for a long time and no more people were let in. We tried to call the commander or his deputy but we got no answer. After a short while the carrousels opened and until 15:15 all the people were taken care of. Two people, GSS restricted, told us that Silvia helped them. Another person gave us his details in order to get our help. To the others we suggested to come back Sunday morning. Rachel’s Passage – 13:40: High walls, “shinning example” of a terminal. A group of tourists came out of Bethlehem; they went through without any difficulty. Palestinian workers coming back from work in Jerusalem stood in a queue, each one handed out his magnetic card to a soldier who was sitting by the computer. The persons’ picture and all his details showed up on the screen.
