Rihan, Aanin, Thursday, 27.7.06 PMObservers and reporters: Mara, Shula14:45 – 16:00Rihan Checkpoint 14:45 – Pedestrian checkpoint: a lot of people returning to the West bank at this hour, mothers with children, women students returning from studies, workers, many car passengers sent for inspection in the terminal. The latter are hurrying through the check in order not to delay the cars, while a soldier high up in the pillbox calls to them not to run. In the opposite direction the traffic is also lively. People say that there are days when the process in the terminal takes a great deal of time.A man waiting for his son asked us to find out for him why the boy has been delayed already for two hours. Clarification with the checkpoint commander elicited the contention that the 21 year old is an illegal. Within fifteen minutes he is released. At the entrance to the terminal from the seam zone people are waiting in the opening while the soldiers are standing facing them with their rifles pointing downwards. The owners of big packages are asked to open everything on the ground before they move on to be inspected inside the terminal.Vehicle Checkpoint: two vehicles loaded with eggs are waiting to pass in the hot sun.Aanin Checkpoint 15:45Seems like we missed the hour of transit.Muhamad, a youth covered in sweat, arrives in despair at the checkpoint, late. How will he get home to Aanin a short distance away from the checkpoint? By chance a man with a car happens by and promises to take him to Rihan Checkpoint for 30 shekels, and from there he can take a taxi to Aanin. Mara had three sacks of clothes, which we gave the driver and got from him a promise that this will be in place of Muhamad’s payment.
