Abu-Dis and Sheikh Saed Sunday, 23.07.2006, AM (06:30-08:30)Observers: Meira A., Dalia K., (reporter)6:45 – Next to the checkpoint commanding the way to Sheikh Saed were 6-7 young detainees, who were caught trying to cross to Israeli territory without permits. The length of their waiting, until we came, according to them, was 20 minutes. Sheikh Saed: 06:50 – Close to 50 (!) detainees, most of them young, next to the checkpoint. In addition, a gathering of youngsters inside of the checkpoint and in the adjoining streets. A Military Police officer at the checkpoint, pleasant to us and to the detainees, reports on the border closure that lets only residents with blue identity cards to cross.Abu-dis: 07:30 – Next to the 2 doorways are soldiers. The street is empty of people.07:50 – At the exit from Al-Ezariya: no checkpoint.The Container: 08:00 – Very sparse movement of cars from the direction of Bethlehem. Very few cars from the opposite direction. We feel (and see) that the traffic flows freely in both directions.
