Sheikh Saed, Abu-DisTuesday, 29.08.2006, PMObservers: Julia W., Rina H., Rahel W.Sheikh Saed – It was blistering hot when we arrived. There were four pleasant enough border police who were trying to keep cool. We saw only one person cross over from Sheikh Saed to Jabel Mukaber. A bulldozer was digging a trench near the checkpoint (the locals thought it was for electrical wiring or telephone connections but they were not sure). We crossed into Sheikh Saed and one of the men hanging around the shops took us to the dirt road that led to Sawahre. A four wheel drive slowly made its way up the road and a second went in the direction of Sawahre. Few people on the streets. School is to start this coming weekend and the people we spoke to were not sure about what would happen with the teenagers who have no school in their local community. We continued on to Abu-Dis via Ras-el-Amud. There was not a soul to be seen. The “decorative” wall between the houses continues. When we neared the formed pishpash, a man emerged – the only non military person we saw. Otherwise, the whole area was totally desolate.
