Qalandiya, Ar-Ram
Qalandiya, Ar-Ram, 31.8.2006 Thursday morningObservers: Hanna A., Michaela R., Nava E. (Reporting)Ar-ram. Few pedestrians who pass quickly and the few cars also do so. The border policeman explaines that there are 6 detainees who tried to “cut the fence.” 4 of the younger ones had been taken for their crime to help mend it. two older ones were kept there until the end of their educational punishment. Because they had been brought there by army jeep he said he had not checked their ids and would not free them. Only when the army jeep came back would they be freed and he said he could keep them for three hours and that it would be the three hours that they were physically there and they would not keep them more or less than 3 horus. On the road from Ar-Ram to Qalandiya at 7.20 we found that the Palestinian side of the road was blocked by diggings and a wall which had been built lately and it turned eastward from the old route and now includes the area of Ar-ram in the area of Jerusalem. Is this as a result of the court decision which succeeded? The Palestinians drive on the dust and stone road which turns in a northern direction to the inner road of Ar-Ram. We did not wish to take our car on this road and got there through road 443. On the way back we would that we had to get to Beit Hanina and from there after the gas station to turn to the write and again to the right and from there in a north west direction we get to the wall on the Israeli side. Qalandiya. 7.45 The movement of pedestrians is small compared to the early hour and the passage swift and this too is so with the cars and both sides of the checking area are open. A numbr of people who left Nablus early in the morning and arrived in a taxi are not allowed to pass because today people from Nablus cannot pass here . One of them argues with the soldier who screams : I told you….don’t you understand Hebrew?” And repeated this in an annoyed tone and truly how dare the man argue with him and not understand Hebrew. These people go to another turnstile where all except one are allowed to pass.District Commissioner’s Office . 8.10 It is at the end of the 5th turnstile where 12 Palestinians are already waiting …the DCO was supposed to open at 8.30. One of them takes down their names in order. 8.35 two soldiers of the passage unit (blue hat) and a military police arrive and disappear into the room on the right hand side. 8.40 A gren light and the first 11 pass through having their baggage checked and. from there to the waiting room.9.20 We want to leave and the men who were waiting for a magnetic cars are still sitting in the inside waiting room. The people say they can get this immediately so long as one is not “refused” .If there is a problem they are not told which, police? Security? And they are simply sent to Beit-El.The post office is at the side for anyone who passes the checkpoint. The post office is in a car and there is air conditioning. It is open each day till the afternoon. The clerk speaks Hebrew and there is no line.National Insurance. It stands at the right of the post office and if also in an air conditioned car which evidently goes to various checkpoints and to Qalandiya on a Thursday morning between 8.30 to 13.00The cleark speaks Arabic and there is a steady stream of those with blue ids but no line.
