Huwarra, Thursday 10.8.2006 PMObservers” Semadar H. Tal B. (reporting)Natanya reporting.Summary. Mounds of earth at Awarta, confusion at Hawarra. It seems that we arrived after a “stoppage of life”, shooting in the air and three ids which had ‘evaporated.”14.30O our way to Beit Iba (to let off the other women) at the crossrodas of Jit in the direction of Beit Iba20 cars. On our way back we saw the soldiers at Jit who had brought the checkpoint forward to the industrial area of Kedumiem. Crossroads of Burin 20 cars from Jit and in the direction of Hawarra 40.15.10 Awarta. 12 trucks wishing to enter Nablus and when we arrived the soldiers were not checking in that direction. After some minutes Abdullah told us that the company which had succeeded in the contract had said that each porter would get money from the company and not the drivers. The drivers would pay the same amount to the company??????? Today they were not there. The road from Awarta to Hawarra has dirt mounts on it evidently to prevent people slipping through.15.45 Checkpoint of Hawarra full of people and cars and entering Nablus 30 cars. Nothing is passing,. We do not know why.16.15 The cars are slowly freed and there are about 100 people at the crossroads. A Palestinian is looking for his id. He is told by the commander to stand at the side and is trying to explain. Many soldiers doing nothing. The humanitarian line is blocked and open. Cars from Nablus there are none.8 detainees in the checking post near the soldiers, three of them handcuffed and their eyes are bound. A family in the hut. It seems that one of the boys was found with a disc of Nasrallah and all are waiting for him. One detainee in the enclosure who was stopped when metal stakes were found on him. We phoned the humanitarian centre about the detainees. The soldier checking the cars does so very thoroughly including the contents of bags. A handcuffed man is taken to a police van which is taking him to Ariel for investigation. He is suspected of attacking a soldier.A Palestinian say that an hour or two before there were many people at the checkpoint and the soldiers both men and women had been pushing them and shot in the air.In the meantime another man has lost his id.6 detainees are freed and two are left in the enclosure and in the hut. The one man has received his metal rods back and his id is another story. The commander gives two men who had lost their ids notes saying that they had been lost at the checkpoint and given his details.A man leaves the lines and says that he has waited an hour and a half. One of the detainees says he has been there since 9am. Before he was in handcuffs. We again phone Semadar at the centre.18.00 4 cars waiting to enter Nablus and fewer people. The id of the man with the metal rods has also been lost. The others have been sent back to Beit Iba. 10 cars from Jit and 18 at Kedumiem. At the turning to Shave Shomron cement blocks which cuts off most of the road and an iron gate.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
