Beit Iba
Beit Iba, Wednesday, 22.11.06, PM Observers: Tami C. and Raiya Y. We travelled by way of Jabara, Shufa, Beit Lid. 15:05 – We arrived at Beit Iba. The checkpoint was manned by the Haruv unit. Four detainees in the cell, among them one woman who seem very frightened. According to the lieutenant, there was a serious alert concerning her. The GSS was supposed to arrive to check her. The others were “infiltrators”. We noticed that the turnstiles had been repaired. 15:30 – More than 20 vehicles at the exit from Nablus. Two Military Police and 5 soldiers at the checkpoint, as well as 2 soldiers from the DCO. 7 soldiers were inspecting vehicles. 15:40 – One detainee taken out of the cell and sent to the end of the line, a kind of punishment. 15:50 – Another 3 women added to the detention cell; apparently connected to the same “hot alert”. The number of men increases to 6. The bags of those passing through are thoroughly checked. Sometimes the men are asked to lift their shirts. When we asked exactly who gets this treatment, the answer was “according to their looks”. In general, the atmosphere was relaxed and efficient. 16:05 – The bus driver says that he got to the checkpoint at 12:30, i.e., he waited for three and a half hours. 16:45 – 3 detainees were released. 17:00 – We leave.

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
