Huwwara, Jit, Thursday 15.3.2007, PMObservers: Deborah L. Semadar H. Semadar P.(a Canadian reporter) Yehudiet L. (reporting)Natanya translating. Two shifts in one, We had intended to go to Hawarra and continue to Beit Iba but the crossroads of Jit did not allow this. The weather cold, rain and hail.13.45 – 13.55 Marda, Digging at the southern gate which is always closed ( so as to act as drainage we are told). Za’atra, very few cars and checkpoint of Burin (Yizhar) where there are 10 cars and the checkpoint on road 60 is not manned.14.00 Huwwarra, In the isolation, handcuffed and blindfolded is a wanted man. His cousin wants to give him free and make the handcuffs a bit looser. He says he has been there 4-5 hours, the commander says 2. He is waiting to be taken away. He gets water and the soldiers take him in the direction of the military camp (next to Hawarra). His cousin takes the phone numbers of the humanitarian centre so as to get details and inform the parents. The commander says there is no segregation. No representative of the District Coordinator’s Office while we are there. There is an x-ray machine but it is not used. About 150 people wait. A school day has been added to make up for that lost when the army entered Nablus. So there are many students going home as were last week. 3 checkint post and 2 soldiers and one from the military police. Goods and ids are checked and sometimes the x-ray machine workers. But we still have the “dance of the checkpoints.” 3 soldiers guard. Devorka sees that the middle checking area is not working though it is manned. We bring this to the attention of the commander so should begin to work and serve its purpose. I hope it was so also after we left. Men wait about 70 minutes and for the women and elderly it is less.Cars do not wait to enter Nablus and at the exit we can see 12 and do not know if there are more. An hour an a half for a van by Deborka’s reckoning. All the passengers of a bus alight and there is no shelter for them. Hail starts to come down. Two men who have been checked are chased out of the shelter into the storm by the soldier. A woman without a coat waits for her son and lets us hug her to warm her. 15.55 Burin 65 cars but by 16.05 there are only 25. 16.15 Checkpoint of Jit. Before we get there Naomi L. phoned and we see the tail of about 150-200 cars in the direction of the east and in the direction of the checkpoint. 3 soldiers stand there but only one checks and S L O W L Y. We are forbidden to photograph them. We photographed the line ….such as we have not seen in many a long day. Photographs will be send. On the other side there are less cars and this later empties. 16.20 -We phoned the centre who said they were dealing with it. 16.30 -We phoned Hana B. 16.45 -Again and to Naomi L. They make every effort. 17.10 -Another lane is opened and one of the three soldiers starts to check there and at last cars begin to move. 17.30 -The soldiers let more cars through without checking but the line is still long. The rain whips down.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.

    • The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre  since 2001  two shifts a day -  morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower.  Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.

On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.

Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and  a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The  "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.

On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.

There are about 2500 inhabitants in the village. A large part of their lands was confiscated for the benefit of the settlement of Ariel, some of whose buildings are adjacent to the village.
They often feel under siege. At both entrances to the village from the main road (505) there are checkpoints and the army does close the yellow arms from time to time. The inhabitants of Marda own olive groves behind a fence. Rarely are they allowed to cultivate their agricultural plots
