Southern Hills of Hebron, Tuesday 26/3/2007, AM Observers: Nurit S, Hagit B (reporting) 06.30 – 08.40 Sansana checkpoint – Meitar crossing – at the checkpoint there are soldiers from the engineering corps – a few workers passing without any special problems. Road 60 – near Otniel one military jeep, near Daharia one military jeep, children in their way to school and people waiting for taxi – quiet…Not much after the junction of the roads 60 and 356 – a horrible traffic accident – a truck coming from Jerusalem direction deviated of its lane and hit a private car coming from Beer-Sheva direction – traffic jam on the spot, the passengers trapped in the private car and they are – God forbid – deadly wounded or even dead and it’s going to be a while till rescued from the car which is under the truck and army forces – the ambulance has not yet arrived – it arrives while we are there. The first drivers arriving on the site are trucks drivers, Israeli Arabs, they extinguished the fire. The settlers rescue forces are the first on the site and together with them my “acquaintance” Haim – the photographer of the Jewish settlement in Hebron. Those people are in great stress – one of them, wearing like a uniform, points a rifle towards the Palestinians and shouts: “go away!” with his hands fluttering, pointing his finger and shouting – there is violence in the air – and he almost fires his rifle – it’s lucky that he suddenly saw Nurit and me among the Arabs – other way he would shoot… Haim the photographer said to me “You came here for provocation again”…There arrived a paratroopers jeep blocking the junction and evacuating the persons back – in this case, too there were two speech forms: one for the Palestinians who most of them are taxi drivers and passengers and one for the Jewish drivers – most of them settlers. To the settlers they spoke quietly and thoughtful and to the Palestinians – with hands fluttering, pointing finger and shouting…The violent atmosphere in this area, the sovereign way of driving of the settlers… These all are so burdensome. We assume that waiting for nothing on this traffic jam would do no good and we’ll arrive late in Hebron when the pupils go to school and therefore we turn back and continue on road 356. Road 356 There are no military vehicle on the road and a few cabs. Entering Bnei Hever – the checkpoint of Bnei Naim is open – the pillbox occupied. Zif junction – open – the store is still closed.By the military post – new placard – and the cameras film as usually. Road 317 – at the settlement Carmel they are building a new building – the crane is working Hirbet Twany – entering Yatta – open – the pupils arrived safely at the school. Beit Yatir checkpoint – Nazalin – again the combat engineering corps soldiers – the checkpoint is empty – the soldiers yawn – they complete the building of the new crossing , the yellow gate stands and the pillbox is built but still empty At the military base near the entrance to Yatir – they have built a high tower with a round upper part full of windows – the big brother rules higher up. Ramadin checkpoint – a few cars passing, the combat engineering corps soldiers – very cute and nice to the Palestinians in a great way – one of the Palestinians says: “they are very cute children” – and this checkpoint is the cleanest I ever saw – not even one nylon to be found… That’s it. The end.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
