Sha'ab al-Butum: The settlers try every day to displace the locals from their homes and lives
“We only come to Palestine, we don’t want to visit Israel”, told me volunteers from Denmark and Germany.
We went again to visit the Jabarin family and heard again about the repeated harassments, trying to exhaust and make the region residents despair and leave their fields and homes. Laila and Mohammad with a part of their family including their year-old sweet twin-toddlers (the mother was in Yatta, preparing to give their baby sister tomorrow in a C-section) were waiting for us, with the Danish and German volunteers, polite and reserved. I’ll the detail the conversation with them a bit later.
Their reality is a daily chronicle of unending harassments. Yesterday, Amichai Shiloh came again with his sheep flock to the very entrance of the home, armed and accompanied by two colonists. They went around like house owners for about an hour and then left, and this was repeated at 6 a.m. and at 4 p.m., for an hour. We called the police, said the Palestinians, but did not even get an answer. This is how it is the whole time. If it is not with their flock, they come in on their ATVs and made noisy rounds with it all day, every day.
The young women from Europe say come only to Palestine, just to Palestine. I dare suggest that as an Israeli protesting the occupation, I would think they would also visit Israel and meet other Israelis protesting the government’s policy and hear our views to understand the complexity and roots of the narrative. “Even if your mind is made up”, I say, “perhaps it is worth making this mind up on the basis of wider, more complete information of all sides.”
“I am from Germany”, says one of them to me, to make it clear that she knows exactly what happened to Jews in her country. They are polite, they listen and nod their heads, but that’s what they do in the meantime, “only visiting Palestine.”

שוב נסענו לבקר את מש’ ג’אברין, ושוב שמענו על ההטרדות החוזרות ונשנות של המתנחלים, המנסים להתיש ולייאש ולגרום לתושבי האזור לוותר ולעזוב את שדותיהם ובתיהם. לילה ומוחמד עם חלק ממשפחתם כולל הפעוטות התאומות המתוקות בנות השנה (האם ביאטא בהכנה ללידת אחותן מחר בניתוח קיסר) מחכים לנו ואיתם מתנדבות מגרמניה ודנמרק מנומסות ומסויגות. אפרט קצת בהמשך את תוכן השיחה איתן.
המציאות שלהם היא כרוניקה יומיומית של הטרדות שלא פוסקות. אתמול בא שוב עמיחי שילה עם עדר הכבשים עד לפתח הבית ממש, עם נשק ושני מתנחלים נוספים. הם הסתובבו כאילו הם בעלי הבית במשך שעה והלכו, בשש בבוקר וגם בארבע אחה”צ שוב לשעה. התקשרנו למשטרה הם אומרים, אפילו לא ענו לנו. ככה זה כל הזמן. אם המתנחלים לא באים עם העדר, אז הם באים עם טרקטורון ועושים איתו סיבובים רועשים, כל הזמן כל יום.
הצעירות מאירופה מספרות שהן באות רק לפלסטינים, רק לפלסטין. אני מעזה להציע להן, כישראלית המוחה נגד הכיבוש, לבקר גם בישראל ולפגוש עוד ישראלים שמתנגדים למדיניות הממשלה ולשמוע עוד דעות כדי להבין באמת את מורכבות הסיפור ואת שורשיו. ‘גם אם זאת דעתכן’, אני אומרת, ‘אולי כדאי לגבש את הדעה הזאת על סמך מידע רחב יותר ושלם יותר של כל הצדדים.’
‘אני מגרמניה,’ מדגישה בפני אחת מהן, כדי להבהיר לי שהיא יודעת בדיוק מה קרה ליהודים בארצה. הן מנומסות, מקשיבות, מהנהנות בראשיהן, אבל זה מה שיעשו בינתיים , יבקרו רק בפלסטין.

This is one of the small Palestinian communities in Masafer Yatta in the southern Hebron Hills, near the settlement of Mitzpe Avigail.
Since the outbreak of the October 7, 2023 war, settler violence against residents has escalated greatly, as in the entire Palestinian community. This violent conduct receives full backing from the state and full cooperation from the IDF. The goal is to make the lives of the Palestinian residents miserable and make them abandon and leave.
The population consists of mostly shepherds who peacefully seek to cultivate the land and graze their sheep, whom the settlers treat as a dangerous enemy. They prohibit them from any movement related to herding sheep and cultivating the land and harm everything: trampling crops, breaking olive trees, smuggling herds, scaring shepherds, conducting wild searches of houses, shouting, cursing and threatening - at all hours of the day. "We are Besieged, but will not move from our land," says Lila G. New settlements are springing up around them. At first it's a bus or a truck that turns into residential buildings, on top of which every week more residential buildings and animal sheds are added. With the open encouragement of the current government, Jewish terrorism is raising its head, with authority and permission. The settlers have received army uniforms and weapons, and no one is stopping them. The police, who are supposed to protect the Palestinians from the settlers' riots, sometimes respond to calls for help, but in practice they don't do much more than provide them with a report, and they are required to go and file a complaint in Kiryat Arba Settlemnt police station . Though the settlers' identities are known, they are !never arrested.
