Afternoon
On the way to Abu Dis, we noticed police and border police along the walls of the old city, especially next to Damascus Gate. The wall is the same. People are still crossing on the hill. 2 border police soldiers were standing at the passage, asking occasionally for IDs. No one was detained. The passage is even more difficult now.We went towards the university discovering the wall extension. so there is no passage through the gate of the university which was closed. Still, the Palestinians managed to move one of the concrete barricades near the mosque a bit , and created a slim passageway. Only slim people can go through. From a distance it seemed surrealistic – people walking next to the wall and then disappearing in it. We were told that this passage is probably going to be closed by the army or border police any time soon. The students and everybody else are expected to go through Maaleh Edomim (A Zaim) checpoint. We were told by a young guy who was caught on the wrong side of the wall and was given a choice between being beaten up or being brought to trial. He chose the latter and was fined 1500 NIS and a threat of prison if caught again. He showed us where the border police beat people – in the garage behind the gas station near where you enter the vegetabe store. We were told by another person about the beatings there. We asked the commander of the unit, but he denied any knowledge of it.
