MachsomWatchers: T.Sh., H.B., N.A., S.A.Very few people at the checkpoint during our entire shift. A soldier was standing at the head of the line, checking documents and allowing through everyone with a permit or a blue ID card; the rest he referred to the volunteers at the station. At the checkpoint, two young women are being detained. In the beginning, we didn’t notice them since they were inside the hut before we had arrived there, and only after a while did they come out and moved around the checkpoint area rather freely. About 2 hours later, the blue police came and, after one of the women was subjected to a body search, they were both put in a patrol car and taken to the police station. In answer to our inquiry, Amir, the officer at the checkpoint, answered that one of them “turned herself in” (?); he wasn’t willing to give any more details beyond that. According to Amir, the second woman had a forged passport.A man who works for Oxfam [internat’l relief agency] asked to go through and was stopped by Amir; only after our intervention did Amir agree to clarify whether or not OxFam is considered a humanitarian organization. When he got an affirmative answer, he allowed the man to pass.We talked with some local people about the shooting which had caused the death of a youth last week. We were told that since that day, children are being prevented — until now — from throwing stones. The line of vehicles moves pretty quickly.Tora Bora: empty.A-Ram Checkpoint: two people had been detained and were released soon after our arrival.
