Abu-Dis 23/3/2004 Watchers: Michaela R., Yael J., Judith S. (reporter) A day after the assasination of Yassin. 06:40, the Pishpash gate. Jeep 22-217 with driver and one bs. A second jeep left before we could see it’s number. A group of 5 bs discussing instructions.Near the opening there are now 5 BP soldiers. Not many Palestinians at the passage. 1 soldier checking. Those with blue IDs are allowed to pass. Checking of bags is performed more thoroughly, including school bag.A woman with Orange ID holding a plastic bag of a X-ray from Kupat-Holim Klalit clinic is permitted to pass. School boys and girls are pass without their bags being checked. The commander of the CP tells the other one he should check them, saying: “Little ones, little ones, but…”.3 soldiers at the passage. 2 speak Arabic. They laugh because one of the Palestinians works in Hevra Kadisha (burial society). They continue to check. Under the closure, it is not surprising that the majority hold blue IDs . But, still, each one is asked where he is working, and one soldier, standing next to the one who checks, is writing down each ID’s number and names. Suddenly he stops, and no other soldier takes over the “job”. Just an individual “enterprise”. The jeep turns in reverse and orders the taxi drivers to evacuate the area. They return, of course, a bit later.Until 07:40 there were no special problems. At about this hour many Doctors and hospital stuff arrived. They were allowed to pass, but told us: “Suddenly they all say they are doctors…” 3 Palestinians, who were refused passage a bit earlier, were allowed to pass. Upon our inquiery what are the day instruction we got this answer: “Only the dying or the dead will pass!” The actual situation was different. The atmosphere, inspite the fact that the majority were allowed to pass, was very unpleasant. Joking, being jolly was in fact humiliating. The one who “directed” this atmosphere was O. (known to Neta E. He arrested her in Abu-Dis, during the Women against the Wall demonstration.) We asked him why he humiliates the Palestinians. He said: “I am not. I have a good Heart.” Surprisingly, the general atmosphere was not intensely tense. On our way back we were told that all shops and caffes were closed due to 3 days mourning. We entered OCHA and took many maps of Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem.
