South Hebron 23/4/2004 Watchers: Aviya H. (reporting), Hagit B., 2 guests We left Shoket junction at 6:30. Near Meytar — a community police checkpoint. On the turn to Dahariya there were BP jeeps and 2 quarry trucks. All over the roads, the dirt mounds had been renewed and made higher than before (the bulldozers have been working hard apparently…) El Fawar–Dura. The gates were open and traffic flowing; only, there is not much traffic since it was Friday, the day of rest. Yata–Zif junction. Again, high dirt mounds and a yellow iron gate. Roads are practically empty. We went back to the Sheep junction. When we got there the army Hummer is not yet there, and we went to speak to the taxi drivers on the Hebron side. We were told about the incident at El Fawar, where the army stopped an ambulance and a Palestinian man was left to bleed to death (we were familiar with this story). They also told us about the constant passage difficulties they were experiencing (which is all too familiar and annoying; both the situation, and our inability to help). At this point an army Hummer (nr. 703811) appeared, ostensibly to make sure that we were safe. We went to Yata’s side and spoke to the taxi drivers on that side. A Palestinian man told us that his ID card had been confiscated several days ago by soldiers (jeep #: 515735). The man could not give us his ID # and it would therefore be extremely hard to help him. While we were on the Yata side of the road, the sergeant of the Hummer kept the Palestinians from crossing the road to the Hebron side, using the usual claim that he was protecting us. We walked away from there and the people were again allowed to cross.Hagit tried to reach the operations office of the Yehuda regiment in order to report about the confiscated ID but they refused “to talk to civilians”. Inbal and Uri from operations were transferring Hagit’s call back and forth between them and the Emergency Center, where there was no answer. We went back to our van and left.

    • Zif Junction located on the crossroads that directs towards Road 356 to Yata. Yata is the district city of the southern Hebron Mountains. Usually, this junction is open to traffic. The nearby pillbox is unmanned. But the army and police are present occasionally, sometimes setting up a checkpoint and sometimes detaining residents from the big city. Often,  the Israeli policemen inspect vehicles and distribute driving reports to Palestinian vehicles. s
