Ar-Ram, Qalandiya Thursday morning, 29.1.2004 Watchers: Rama Y., Meira A., Mili M. (reporting) A quiet morning, just before the suicide bomb attack on Bus No. 19 on Jerusalem’s Gaza Street. Ar-Ram : Traffic flows early in the morning. On our way back, we wait about five minutes to cross the checkpoint. Along the main road there is a concrete fence, not high but it certainly blocks the passage from one side of the road to the other. Qalandiya: There was quite a queue when we came and quite crowded. Only two soldiers did the checking. Apparently in response to the grumble of the crowd another soldier was added, and the queue practically disappeared. The soldiers seem quite lenient, and they let adults accompanied by children to go by the side. They did check them, but efficiently and quietly.Uriel was there too, trying the sort the pedestrian traffic into separate lanes according to the type of their IDs [Israeli vs Territories]. Later he came to the southern side and told the bagel vendors and the coffee sellers to move their carts further down east and on the other side of the road beginning from 7.30 in the morning. The security reasons for his request are unclear, but clearly they will have fewer customers.
