South Har-HebronSunday morning, 23 May 2004Watchers: Adi W., Miri (guest), Sarit H.This was a quite uneventful shift. We left Shoket at 6:30 with our driver, Ibrahim. Near Cramim we passed through a mobile (unscheduled) checkpoint staffed by Israeli (blue-uniformed) police. We drove to Shim’a (Samoa). At the checkpoint, the soldiers asked for our ID’s and one of them asked what Machsom Watch is about. This was only a provocative question – as the soldier had a ready-made answer concerning the relationship between blockades and the struggle against terrorist attacks. We kept driving. Al-Fawwar-Dura junction was open for passage, few pedestrians, and the pillbox empty of soldiers. We continued to Hebron-Yatta (Tzomet Hakvasim). Few pedestrians; the [IDF?]Humvee was there, but there were no delayed pedestrians, so we decided to drive on to Bani Naim’, Yatta, Shiyuch and Halhul. We stopped at the Zif junction but the pillbox was empty of soldiers and the road open. There were no special events there. We drove back to Hebron-Yatta, pedestrians were crossing, the Humvee was still there, but we could not see soldiers checking the pedestrians. We drove back to Shoket.

Zif Junction located on the crossroads that directs towards Road 356 to Yata. Yata is the district city of the southern Hebron Mountains. Usually, this junction is open to traffic. The nearby pillbox is unmanned. But the army and police are present occasionally, sometimes setting up a checkpoint and sometimes detaining residents from the big city. Often, the Israeli policemen inspect vehicles and distribute driving reports to Palestinian vehicles. s
