‘Anabta, Ar-Ras, Jubara (Kafriat), Qalqiliya, Tue 11.12.07, Morning

Observers: Sarah K, Elinoar B (reporting)
Dec-11-2007
| Morning

Empty roads and sparse traffic everywhere

Qalqiliya checkpoint
06:40-07:00  – The encirclement of the city is off, Isareli & Palestinian vehicles go in and out of the city after being checked by the border policemen manning this checkpoint.  A group of young children who go to school in Israel come out running to their transportation vehicles. An attempt to find out how come Palestinian children  study in Israeli villages was not successful; perhaps one of the parents is an Israeli citizen; such mixed marriages abound in Qalqiliya and many people who live here carry Israeli IDs.

Road 55
At the entrance to Azzun there are no soldiers, the curfew is off, but the concrete blocks are still there.

Anabta
09:15-09:45  (on the way back from Beit Iba)  –  Tulkarm checkpoints are manned by reserve soldiers, who are more judicious as a rule than the regulars. On the entrance side no lines at all, on the exit side a fairly short line of waiting cars, moving fast.

Jubara & A-Ras
09:50-10:30  – The new reserve soldiers up at gate 753 (up the village) ask us to wait while they call the Operations Room to find out if they can let us pass. Down at Ar-Ras the traffic is sparse, the soldiers friendly, but there is a dog-handler whose dog checks a taxi thoroughly, apparently to train the dog, not due to specific suspicions.

The checkpoint is located south of the village of 'Anabta, at the intersection of Road 60 (leading to Nablus at the entrance to Area A), with Road (57, 557, 5576) facing west towards the Einav settlement and the checkpoint at the exit from the West Bank - Figs checkpoint. Until 2010 we used to watch the intersection and report the long columns created due to a slow inspection of the vehicles in both directions.

    •   The Jabra checkpoint was on Road 557, south of Tulkarm, on the side of the Figs Pass, which is located within the Palestinian Authority (a few kilometers east of the Green Line), and serves as an entry barrier from the territories to Israel. The checkpoint to the village of Jubara, which until 2013 was in the seam area, blocked and surrounded by a fence, was intended for the passage of the family members of the house next to the checkpoint, and also for the MachsomWatch volunteers (with special permission only), on their way to checkpoint 753. on the other side of the village. The soldiers supervising the "fig crossing" also supervised the crossing at this checkpoint, in our shifts we often waited a long time until the key was found and the gate opened. The checkpoint was abolished and became part of the separation fence that was moved west following the High Court.

    • Qalqilya is surrounded on all sides by the separation barrier. The only exit from the city is in the east of the city on the road that leaves the city in an easterly direction. This is where the checkpoint was located. When the checkpoint was active until 2009 our shifts watched long queues of cars being inspected at the only exit from the city to the West Bank. The checkpoint was canceled, but there is a military presence at the entrance to the city.
