Anin Checkpoint: The occupation is full of loopholes and holes

15:00 – A’anin Checkpoint

The gate on the seamline zone side of the checkpoint has been open for years, while the gate in the center of the checkpoint on the security road is locked and there is a row of yellow pillars in front of it.  There is a large hole in the fence to the left of the gate that is blocked from cars crossing it by a large pile of earth.    To the left of that is another hole in the fence that is also blocked by piles of earth and ditches..  Men and women, together with us, crossed through this hole.  We saw several children on bicycles who were about 12 years old who wanted to get to Um Al Fahem.  This seemed to us to be dangerous because the road is narrow without any shoulders and cars are speeding along it.   An army jeep arrived, and Salah, the commander, was determined to make us leave the checkpoint and would not tell us when it would open for tractors to cross.   To the right of the checkpoint in a family was sitting next to their tractor drinking coffee.  M., who invites us to purchase gallons of olive oil from him each year,  recited the names of Elia, Neta, Shuli and Tami, and is certain that the gate will open at 16:00.

We drove to the large hole in the fence to see people crossing opposite Um Al Fahem.  We drove on the dirt road with hundreds of workers returning home.   The road led down a steep incline to the hole in the fence  and the village of A’anin was behind it.   Some had left their cars there and would then drive on into the West Bank even as far as Nablus.   We stayed there for about 20 minutes and saw families climbing up the steep incline.  One young woman who was obviously having difficulty climbing said “It’s OK, I’ll go slowly.”    The view to the southwest was very pretty, but  there were already piles of litter and garbage along the road, testimony that many people were crossing there.

16:00 Tura – Shaked Checkpoint

There was a lot of traffic in both directions.   Women and children carrying shopping bags were returning from shopping in the West bank.   They walked down the sleeve for pedestrians and were picked up in a 4X4 vehicle and crowded into it.  

16:25 – Barta’a Reihan Checkpoint

Three busses were parked on the seamline zone side that had brought workers back.  The parking lot on the Palestinian side was full. And there were still many cars in the other parking lots.  

It was beginning to get dark.  We did not go to Hermesh Checkpoint, but drove on while watching a lovely sunset.  The street lamps on the road leading to the settlement of Hermesh went on at 16:30.

Many vehicles were driving Palestinian workers to the holes in the fence on the way to Harish.  Both the army and the Palestinians know about them.

15:00 מחסום עאנין

השער בצד מרחב התפר פתוח לרווחה כבר שנים. השער האמצעי, לצד כביש המערכת וגדר ההפרדה, נעול ולפניו תקועה שורה של עמודונים צהובים, שאחדים מהם נשלפים. לשמאל השער הנעול יש פירצה גדולה ותלולית עפר גדולה חוסמת את המעבר בה לרכבים. לשמאלה של הפירצה הזאת – יש עוד אחת, רחבה, גם היא חסומה לרכבים בתעלה ובתלוליות. מספר גברים ונשים עוברים בפירצה הזו בהגיענו לשם. גם אנחנו עוברות ופוגשות שני ילדים כבני 10-12 רכובים על אופניים שמבקשים להגיע לאום אל פחם. זה נראה לנו מסוכן: הכביש צר, ללא שוליים והמכוניות דוהרות. מאוחר יותר מגיע ג’יפ צבאי. המפקד, סאלח, נחוש לסלק אותנו מהמחסום ולא מוכן לגלות לנו מתי השער ייפתח לטרקטוריסטים. במטע הזיתים מימין – טרקטור ולידו משפחה שהתיישבה לנוח על כוס קפה. מ’, מי שבכל שנה מפציר בנו לקנות אצלו גלונים של שמן זית, מתקרב אלינו ושמח לגלגל על לשונו את שמותיהן של אֶליָה נטע שולי ותמי. הוא בטוח שהשער ייפתח בארבע.

מכאן נסענו שוב לצפות ולהתרשם מהמעבר החופשי בפירצה הגדולה בגדר ההפרדה מול אום אל פחם. עלינו אל דרך העפר עם מאות הפועלים שחזרו מהעבודה. הדרך מובילה אל מדרון תלול היורד אל גדר ההפרדה ומאחוריו הכפר עאנין. חלקם השאירו בעאנין את מכוניותיהם ומשם ירחיקו ללב הגדה, אפילו עד שכם. הסתובבנו שם כ-20 דקות. פגשנו גם משפחות שטיפסו במעלה התלול לכיוון אום אל פחם. אשה צעירה שנראה היה שהיא מתקשה בעלייה – מרגיעה אותנו: לא נורא, שווייה שווייה. לאט לאט. הנוף שנפתח לכיוון דרום מזרח מאד יפה אך לצדי הדרך כבר מצטברות ערימות של זבל ואשפה, שמעידה לפחות על כך שהדרך שוקקת חיים…

16:00 מחסום טורה-שקד

תנועה ערה יחסית של כלי רכב בשני הכיוונים. נשים וילדים חוזרים בשמחה מקניות בגדה, עמוסים שקיות. הם יוצאים מהשרוול (מסלול מגודר להולכי רגל)  ונאספים בדוחק ברכב 4X4 שמגיע אחריהם מהמחסום.

16:25 מחסום ברטעה-ריחן

בצד מרחב התפר חונים שלושה אוטובוסים שהחזירו פועלים. בצד הפלסטיני – מגרש החנייה מלא. גם בשאר המגרשים עדיין יש מכוניות רבות.

התחיל להחשיך. ויתרנו הפעם על מחסום יעבד ונסענו מערבה לכיוון חרמש בעקבות שקיעה יפהפייה. הפנסים שהוצבו לאורך הדרך עד התנחלות חרמש – נדלקים בדיוק ב-16:30.

בדרך לחריש – מכוניות רבות מחזירות פועלים פלסטינים אל הפרצות בגדר הידועות לכולם – לפלסטינים ולצבא.

      'Anin checkpoint is located on the Separation Fence east of the Israeli community Mei Ami and close to the village of Anin in the West Bank. It is opened twice a week, morning and afternoon, on days with shorter light time, for Anin farmers whose olive groves have been separated from the village by the fence it became difficult to cultivate their land. Transit permits are only issued to those who can produce ownership documents for their caged-in land, and sometimes only to the head of the family or his widow, eldest son, and children. Sometimes the inheritors lose their right to tend to the family’s land. The permits are eked out and are re-issued only with difficulty. 55-year-old persons may cross the checkpoint (into Israel) without special permits. During the olive harvest season (about one month around October) the checkpoint is open daily and more transit permits are issued. Names of persons eligible to cross are held in the soldiers’ computers. In July 2007, a sweeping instruction was issued, stating that whoever does not return to the village through this checkpoint in the afternoon will be stripped of his transit permit when he shows up there next time. Since 2019, the checkpoint has not been allways locked with the seam-line zone gate (1 of 3 gates), and the fence around it has been broken in several sites.

    • This checkpoint is located on the Separation Fence route, east of the Palestinian town of East Barta’a. The latter is the largest Palestinian community inside the seam-line zone (Barta’a Enclave) in the northern West Bank. Western Barta’a, inside Israel, is adjacent to it. The Checkpoint is open all week from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Since mid-May 2007, the checkpoint has been managed by a civilian security company subordinate to the Ministry of Defense. People permitted to cross through this checkpoint into and from the West Bank are residents of Palestinian communities inside the Barta’a Enclave as well as West Bank Palestinian residents holding transit permit. Jewish settlers from Hermesh and Mevo Dotan cross here without inspection. A large, modern terminal is active here with 8 windows for document inspection and biometric tests (eyes and fingerprints).  Usually only one or two  of the 8 windows are in operation. Goods,  up to medium commercial size, may pass here from the West Bank into the Barta’a Enclave.  A permanent registered group of drives who have been approved by the may pass with farm produce. When the administration of the checkpoint was turned over to a civilian security firm, the Ya’abad-Mevo Dotan Junction became a permanent checkpoint. . It is manned by soldiers who sit in the watchtower and come down at random to inspect vehicles and passengers (February 2020).

      This is a fabric of life* checkpoint through which pedestrians, cabs and private cars (since 2008) pass to and from the West Bank and the Seam-line Zone to and from the industrical zone near the settler-colony Shaked, schools and kindergartens, and Jenin university campuses. The checkpoint is located between Tura village inside the West Bank and the village of Dahar Al Malah inside the enclave of the Seam-line Zone.  It is opened twice a day, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., and from 12 noon to 7 p.m. People crossing it (at times even kindergarten children) are inspected in a bungalow with a magnometer. Names of those allowed to cross it appear in a list held by the soldiers. Usually traffic here is scant.

      • fabric of life roads and checkpoints, as defined by the Terminals Authority in the Ministry of Defense (fabric of life is a laundered name that does not actually describe any kind of humanitarian purpose) are intended for Palestinians only. These roads and checkpoints have been built on lands appropriated from their Palestinian owners, including tunnels, bypass roads, and tracks passing under bridges. Thus traffic can flow between the West Bank and its separated parts that are not in any kind of territorial contiguity with it. Mostly there are no permanent checkpoint on these roads but rather ‘flying’ checkpoints, check-posts or surprise barriers. At Toura, a small (less than one dunam) and sleepy checkpoint has been established, which has filled up with the years with nearly .every means of supervision and surveillance that the Israeli military occupation has produced. (February 2020)
