Beit Iba, Tuesday, 20.9.05, AMObservers: Shlomit S, Maya M, Maya S, Elinoar B (reporting)08:00-09:30The vehicle line is short and fast: O, the DCO representative, is standing there. When he moves to the checkpoint itself things are reversed: now it takes a 30 minutes wait to cross by car, while at the checkpoint things are accelerated. A local journalist (Al Ayam) wants to find out when and where the checkpoint should move to its new location. O. says he can ask for an interview with the DCO commander, but the man declines, he is afraid to be seen there and suspected of being a collaborator. As for the answer to his question, there are talks but no budget, as well as problems with villages surrounding this new location. In the detainees’ enclosure we identify a familiar figure: a taxi driver who a year or so ago used to spend hours there as a punishment for trespassing the virtual sacred line. (He is that short, bespectacled frenetic fellow veteran Beit Iba observers may remember). Now the soldiers found a way to circumvent the prohibition to detain as punishment: they [allegedly] check the person’s ID (up to one hour). They tell us this and wink. They say the Brigade Commander Okayed it. We say we shall report it. Anyway, the man (and another taxi driver) is released then and there.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
