Beit Iba 15.40

At the entrance to Nablus a long line was blocking the way of a humanitarian car. There was no way of bypassing. An enormous truck  stood at the side of the taxis and blocked the way.  At the exit were 9 cars which waited about 45 minutes.

Qusin

There was no checking and the way was open.

Pedestrians passed quickly but there were few people.

At the new checkpoint there is a white line on the wall so as to show us where we are to stand. Was it not decided that there were to be no white lines?

16.20

A detainee in the enclosure whose number appears on the list and who says that he is usually detained at Huwarra but there they already know him. It took an hour for him to be freed. Why so long?

There are rumours that tomorrow important people will visit here and there. Nir, the responsible person for the checkpoints is present. We spoke to him about the long line which was blocked and he opened another checking lane but it was still not clear how this would clear the line.

16.45

The detained man is free and told to clear this matter at the DCO but he had already been there and it had not helped.

16.50

We left. No checkpoint at Jit.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.

    • The checkpoint is located on Route 60 near at the junction with Route 55, near the village of Jit. There was a checkpoint for vehicles passing between the north and south of the West Bank, which was abolished towards 2010. Since then, surprise checkpoints have been set up there from time to time with a police or Border Police vehicle, and vehicles and their passengers are inspected.
