| Morning

Abu Dis Friday 19.11.04 AMTeam: Rita M, Naama S, Avital B (reporting)9:20 at the Cliff Hotel: No detainees. No BP soldiers are seen. We decided to go to the container first and return to the Pishpash/Bawabe afterwards. 9:50 Container/Sawahre: About 12 detainees that were taken off taxis and a bus are waiting under the covered part of the passage (for about 30 minutes, according to an Ecumenical observer). In addition, a taxi has been waiting for about 15 minutes. A few minutes after we arrive, most of the detainees are released. Random checking of taxis. The one exceptional case we encountered was a taxi from which all its passengers were told to get off, and stood in a row, while the car was checked by a dog. While this inspection was going on, the soldiers commanded the passengers of the detained taxis, that were standing near the little grocery store, to get into the car, presumably so that they would not see how the search with the dog was conducted. 10.50 at the Pishpash/Bawabe: No presence of the BP. The drivers said that none had been there all morning. People are going and coming freely through the grounds of the convent.

A checkpoint on Jerusalem’s municipal boundary.

It sits on the separation fence south of Abu Dis. The checkpoint is manned by Border Police soldiers and private security companies and operates 24 hours a day. Palestinians are forbidden to go through, other than residents of the Qunbar and Surhi families who live west of the separation fence, some of whom have blue ID cards and others have entry permits to Jerusalem. Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint. Visitors to the families are permitted through the checkpoint only after their hosts obtain permits for them at the checkpoint.
