Abu DisTue. 28.6.05 PMJulia W. , Hana G. , Rina H. ( reporting )Once again , a relatively uneventful shift.Cliff Hotel: No new construction, some private security guards . BP jeep made its rounds , pro forma.Pishpash: BP not interfering with those climbing over the wall ( moving in both directions ). Monastery grounds quite deserted . Other than BP taking a break and a tethered horse , we were the only pedestrians.Container: Traffic moving freely in both directions with a minimum delay . Random checks led to one driver not allowed to pass with new vehicle w/o registration or proof of ownership . Driver was used car dealer so really no reason for the oversight.Army major and lieutenant were measuring the entire container area . When asked why , the reply was to the effect that the area was going to be upgraded , roads would be widened and straightened and a new border-crossing unit would do the checking —all this , to cause less hassle for the local residents. (I’m merely reporting on what I was told, without any ‘editorializing’ on my part )

A checkpoint on Jerusalem’s municipal boundary.

It sits on the separation fence south of Abu Dis. The checkpoint is manned by Border Police soldiers and private security companies and operates 24 hours a day. Palestinians are forbidden to go through, other than residents of the Qunbar and Surhi families who live west of the separation fence, some of whom have blue ID cards and others have entry permits to Jerusalem. Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint. Visitors to the families are permitted through the checkpoint only after their hosts obtain permits for them at the checkpoint.
