Abu Dis, Wadi Nar (Container) Tues. 22.11.05 PMObservers: Chana G., Rahel W. (reporting)We went first to the monastery (the door was open but few people passing through). A few people climbed over the wall at the old pishpash only to meet up with three border police standing in the street. Most of the people now go through the new opening toward the bottom of the hill. We saw one detainee there but did not stop for details.Continued up to the Cliff Hotel. There are now two caravans in front of the entrance. The whole place is a mess. Yet another metal fence has been constructed in the yard behind the hotel. The wall now has a half meter of wire – apparently electrified – as a further deterrent to anyone capable of scaling the 9 meters! No apparent extensions to the Moskowitz settlement. We drove to the Container via the Kedar Road. When we arrived, there were no vehicles or pedestrians at all at the checkpoint. Within minutes, there was a change of guard and everyone, except for the DCO person left. The new border police were the most ineffective, indifferent, and worthless bunch that we ever saw. The DCO representative functioned – that is he waved cars through. The rest of them gathered inside, played loud music, joked among themselves and lines of cars built up which they did not even see. Every so often the DCO man noticed the build up from the other direction and quickly waved everyone through until the lane was empty. And so it went – build up of vehicles, belated recognition that there were people who wanted to go through, a wave through without even a hint of inspection and then a return inside. At one point, after an attractive young woman arrived with her dog and the indifference extended longer than before while some 20 cars were waiting, we called Said Wahid, commander of the Container and told him about the dysfunctional crew at the checkpoint. He promised to look into it. When the BPs saw me speaking on the phone, they started waving cars through, but that lasted for just a few minutes. When the traffic once again built up, I yelled to them that people were waiting to get through and they immediately exited and started waving to the cars to pass.Anyone who claims that these checkpoints are there for security reasons should have witnessed the (non)functioning of the Container today.

A checkpoint on Jerusalem’s municipal boundary.

It sits on the separation fence south of Abu Dis. The checkpoint is manned by Border Police soldiers and private security companies and operates 24 hours a day. Palestinians are forbidden to go through, other than residents of the Qunbar and Surhi families who live west of the separation fence, some of whom have blue ID cards and others have entry permits to Jerusalem. Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint. Visitors to the families are permitted through the checkpoint only after their hosts obtain permits for them at the checkpoint.
