Abu Dis, Az Za’ayyem, ContainerTues. 14.3.06 PMObservers: Julia W., Rina H., Rahel W. (reporting)We went first to the old pishpash to see what was happening. There were no borderpolice or soldiers around, a panel had been removed from the wall at the pishpash and people were crossing freely in both directions. Continued on to the Cliff Hotel which is now in total disrepair. It appears that a few new panels have been added to the wall. We crossed into Abu Dis via the removed panel in the wall. (What a pleasure to simply walk in like human beings rather than trudging through the monastery or climbing the wall). We met our driver and went to Az Za’ayyem which was deserted aside from two young women who came through with their infants. Otherwise, no sign of life.Continued to the Container where there were huge lines of traffic in both directions. The place was understaffed. Whenever checks were made of the transits or cars, traffic piled up again. (At times there were more than 30 vehicles waiting to get through). Then, everyone was just waved through without even a cursory check. There were many, many workers returning toward Bethelehem and unlike in previous weeks, they had to pass through the turnstiles rather than just walking back.We stopped off at a green grocer on the way back but bought nothing because the goods were so poor. The owner explained that because of the closure (Purim), they had not been able to get new produce for three days.Everyone was glued to the TV watching the raid on the jail in Jericho.

A checkpoint on Jerusalem’s municipal boundary. It sits on the separation fence south of Abu Dis. The checkpoint is manned by Border Police soldiers and private security companies and operates 24 hours a day. Palestinians are forbidden to go through, other than residents of the Qunbar and Surhi families who live west of the separation fence, some of whom have blue ID cards and others have entry permits to Jerusalem. Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint. Visitors to the families are permitted through the checkpoint only after their hosts obtain permits for them at the checkpoint.
