Abu-Dis, The Container, Tuesday 25.04.06 PM. Observers: Julia W., Rahel W. (reporting) The pishpash The place has been partially blocked by a meter high concrete block, but it is still possible to get through. Lower down the hill, people are climbing over the walls but then meet a border policeman on the other side. Our driver told us that people chose that route because it is closer and cheaper than taking a transit to the pishpash — despite the humiliation and inconvenience. We went to the Cliff Hotel where we saw a gorgeous rose bush framed by broken windows, destroyed stone walls, and twisted metal wiring. The last remnant of what was once a beautiful, meticulously maintained building. The Container – Things are very quiet. Traffic moved quickly, workers went home without delay, ambulances were waved through, and the border police were cordial.Upon our return, we were told at the pishpash that no one, but no one at all was being allowed. After a moment, one of the b.p.’s relented and asked to see our i.d.’s These were relayed to a group of about 6 senior border policement who were standing to the side. They said that there had been a “happening” and no one was being allowed through. Then, the spokesperson (E.) of the group asked why were countervening the instructions of the general command by going into Abu-Dis. We reminded him that we went only into Area B, our group has been doing it twice a day for the last four years, and we were strictly within the law. He then sent regards to Hannah (I assume it was Hannah B.) and returned the i.d.s and we were on our way.

Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint.
