Abu Dis, ContainerTue. 26.10.04 p.m.Observers: Julia W., Rina H., Rahel W. (reporting)We went first to the pishpash where we noted that one of the concrete barriers was removed so that people could walk across like normal human beings. There were no border police around and movement went freely in both directions. At the Cliff Hotel, no more work was going on, but we did notice that a pathway had been delineated which went from the end of the wall behind the hotel and then out to the road. Will this mark the continuation of the wall, new water pipes? Who knows. There was a border police vehicle and cars entering Al Ezariya from the Ma’ale Adumim Road were being checked, but we were waved through. When we arrived at the Container, there was such a long line of traffic heading toward Bethlehem that we could not see its end. Shortly after our arrival, two border police rather than one started checking the vehicles. Very occasionally, someone was detained, but even they were quickly released. At one point, all vehicles were waved through and encouraged to go as quickly as possible. It was all the luck of the draw. If a vehicle arrived at about 3:00 p.m., he could expect to wait over 30 minutes. If it arrived 40 minutes later, it would have taken under 10 minutes to get through.Quiet shift. No shouting, no extended detentions.

A checkpoint on Jerusalem’s municipal boundary.

It sits on the separation fence south of Abu Dis. The checkpoint is manned by Border Police soldiers and private security companies and operates 24 hours a day. Palestinians are forbidden to go through, other than residents of the Qunbar and Surhi families who live west of the separation fence, some of whom have blue ID cards and others have entry permits to Jerusalem. Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint. Visitors to the families are permitted through the checkpoint only after their hosts obtain permits for them at the checkpoint.
